A painting of chrysanthemums by Chinese-born Sanyu broke the artist’s auction record last night, fetching HK$53.3 million ($6.7 million) at a Christie’s International sale in Hong Kong.
A competition between two telephone bidders pushed the price of “Potted Chrysanthemum in a Blue and White Jardiniere” beyond the HK$35 million presale estimate and above the previous record of HK$42.1 million at Christies in May 2009.
